c. 1760 18th century Whaler’s Flensing Knife, used to remove the outer layer of Blubber from a Whale carcass, Overall length of 17.5”, Very Fine. A nice example of a true Flensing Knife, an essential tool in the whaling trade and used to remove the outer layer of blubber from a whale carcass. The blade on this example measures 9” long, and combined with its handle, the overall length is 17.5”. Flensing knives are akin to a surgeon’s amputation knife, with a long blade that ends in a curved tip, the tip of this example has broken off. Some surface rust on the blade has been ground off resulting in a seemingly distressed actually used appearance and has honest wear from years in use. The wooden handle is original and solid with an expected partial age split and has a rich, golden-brown natural patina to the wood. An early true Colonial Era Whaler’s knife.
