44 issues in this partial bound volume of The Congressional Globe, covering April-June, 1856. This publication is “The Official Proceedings of Congress,” covering the 34th Congress, 1st and 2nd sessions. Picks up April 4 and covers through June. Missing are about the first three weeks in June. Otherwise there are about 700 pages of complete coverage of the House and Senate dealing with issues of the day such as Kansas statehood legislation, the infamous assault of Charles Sumner by Preston Brooks, Indian hostilities, communications from the president and slavery to a myriad of bills, amendments, and the minutiae that national politicians seem to enjoy immensely. If it happened in Congress in this pre-Civil War time frame, it should be in this volume, with words spoken directly by famous statesmen (Sam Houston, Stephen Douglas, William Seward, etc.) As mentioned, some issues removed, one cover board missing, the other loose, otherwise content in very good condition.
