Pair of Autograph Letters Signed by Samuel Ward Junior, both 3pp. octavo, Ward Hall, 1773 & 1774 addressed to Thomas Arnold of Providence, and read in part: “...[May 8, 1774] Hannah takes mercury which has brought her very low, but these are forcing to the soul, tho more disagreeable than the drawn Dagger and its point. I am determined not to sink under the storms and arrows of outrageous fortune. A man never can show his fortitude in the pleasing Gales of Prosperity. Anybody can behave well when all nature conspires to give them pleasure nothing but meaness can tempt them to do other wise, but true fortitude then when we are forsaken by all the world loaded with sickness & misfortunes of every kind rips superior to them all the Gods are pleased to see a brave man struggling with adversity...” The other concerning family and a marriage. Fine condition.
