Union soldier’s 4pp. letter with original cover, written by Francis Edward Heath who on 6/4/1861,was commissioned into "H" Co. Maine 3rd Infantry, was discharged for promotion on 8/26/1862 and was commissioned into Field & Staff Maine 19th Infantry. Promotions: Capt 9/12/1861, Lt Colonel 8/26/1862, Colonel 2/12/1863, Brig-General 3/13/1865 by Brevet. Datelined : Cameron Run Aug. 2nd, 1861, in part “It is so dreadfully warm ... we now have two or three hours of drilling per day, picket duty once a week and guard duty. ... Many of the officers are resigning. We need about a dozen new ones. ... I think the Battle of Bull Run must have knocked the remnants of the Home Guard ... I hear they are getting up a Company at KsMills .... It reported among the missing our Post Master ... the whole brigade is ordered to march over to Fort Ellsworth this afternoon and be there to witness the execution of a soldier who is convicted of murder. ... I am getting callous to all kinds of horrible sights. ... What is your opinion of the length of the war? I don’t see the remotest chance of it ending within the next two years. ...”
