Periodical, Gentleman’s Magazine (London), February 1779, 56 pgs; Complete issue of this publication includes a 1-1/2 page report of the Sea Battle between Bonhomme Richard captained by John Paul Jones and the Serapis captained by Captain Pearson. The report comes in the form of a letter written Oct 6, 1779 by Pearson, and provides great detail, an hour-by-hour report. At one point Pearson says, “I called upon the Captain (Jones) to know if they had struck or if he asked for quarters (surrendered) ...” It is at this point (although not reported here) that Jones is said to have replied, “I have not yet begun to fight.” Later in the letter, Pearson does identify the captain as Captain Paul Jones. Clean issue.
