Union soldier’s 4pp. letter with original cover, written by Francis Edward Heath who on 6/4/1861,was commissioned into "H" Co. Maine 3rd Infantry, was discharged for promotion on 8/26/1862 and was commissioned into Field & Staff Maine 19th Infantry. Promotions: Capt 9/12/1861, Lt Colonel 8/26/1862, Colonel 2/12/1863, Brig-General 3/13/1865 by Brevet.Datelined: Washington DC., June 11, 1861, Camp Mossell, in part “Today I had the pleasure of being one of the numbers of Court-Martial which was convened for the purpose of trying a private in one of the Augustus companies .. sentenced him to ten days hard labor ... The New Hampshire Regiment passed by us yesterday morning in route to Harper’s Ferry, the idea seems to be that the three months men are to form the advance guard at present. ... The only accidents that have happened have been in Capt. Hasseltin’s Co. Pollard was shot by a man behind him on the march to this place ... and tonight..a young fellow who worked for Brono put a bullet through his hand by his own carelessness ....”
