SYNG, PHILIP (1703-1789) DS. Philadelphia silversmith who made the inkstand used for the signing of the Declaration of Independence. 2 Manuscript Documents, one of them Signed by Syng, the other a related documented signed by others, each 1 page oblong on vellum. One is 5 by 11 inches, March 3, 1739, a lease to William Atkinson, shipwright, for a piece of land on the south side of Gilbert's Alley for one year. Signed by Philip and Elizabeth Syng, with two wax seals. The second document is 7 1/4 by 12 inches, Dec. 4, 1739, a lease to Syng for another piece of land on Gilbert's Alley. The land is from the estate of Arthur Wells, as represented by executors Mary Wells, Barnaby Barnes and Edward Warner, who have all signed; three wax seals present. Each documents describes the exact location of the lot. In addition to being a leading silversmith, Syng was an amateur scientist who participated in Franklin's electrical experiments and invented a friction machine which produced electricity. Both documents are in the beautiful handwriting typical of the late 17th to early 18th centuries. Both fine; fold repair to the March 3 document. Scarce.
