Imprint, “Oration by William H. Seward at Plymouth”, December 21, 1855, 16pp. disbound. A powerful call to action against slavery and for the expansion of American ideals. He argued that the nation's destiny was to spread liberty and self-government to all people, including those enslaved. Seward condemned the "higher law" doctrine, which some used to justify slavery, and emphasized the moral imperative to abolish this institution. He also warned against the growing sectionalism and called for national unity based on the principles of freedom and equality. Seward's speech was a significant moment in the lead-up to the Civil War, as it articulated a vision of a nation free from slavery and dedicated to the pursuit of human rights.
