Union soldier's letter written by Samuel Todd enlisted in the Pennsylvania 31st Infantry. The 4pp., pencil letter is to Friend Frank is datelined Sandy Hook, August 4, 1861. In part, "There were new members .. left us on Friday evening .. the remaining members are glad they are gone for they spoiled more music than they made ... I guess you know we are at Harper's Ferry. We only seen a few secessionists .. they were on picket below Harper's Ferry. .. What is left of our Regiment is under the command of Gen. Banks of Mass. Frank the men in the Regt. are hard cases ... Last Thursday about four hundred of them would not take the Oath of Allegiance to the US, so they were stripped of their arms and uniforms and sent under guard to Harrisburg. ... Todd continues on Monday August 5, 1861, in part, "This morning there was great shooting at Harper's Ferry ... They thought it was Johnson coming to take Harper's Ferry. ... We have next to our camp a Regiment of Cavalry who do more service than a dozen regiments of Volunteers. They take prisoners every day. About noon today, they brought from Virginia 7 prisoners, shot 5 men and took 20 horses. ..."
