Camp Chalmette, addressed to Louisiana Governor Moore, and reads in most part: "...I just receive information from General Smith that the enemy's boat have passed and to prepare for immediate action. The brigade battery of field artillery, Capt. Goyal, is absolutely necessary here. Please to order a requisition of horses or mules for that battery. I have a very small supply of infantry cartridges - only ten to each man. I am informed that Gen'l Lovell is in Fort Jackson and I suppose the information is correct since I receive no orders for him…" Laminated, else VG. General Buisson (1793-1874) a former artillery officer in Napoleon's army, was a Louisiana militia general during 1862 at the age of 69. This important letter announces the attack on Forts Jackson and St. Phillip by Union gunboats on their way to capturing New Orleans. Admiral David Farragut put his fleet in motion the morning of the day this letter was written, to run the gauntlet of defenses protecting the Confederate city of New Orleans.
