Rare mid-19th century printed booklet, entitled: "Remarks of Mr. Dellet of Alabama on the Civil and Diplomatic appropriation Billàin the House of Representatives, Aprilà1840," printed by Gales and Seaton, Washington, 1840, 29pp. 8vo., reading, in part: "àMr. Van Buren used every exertion in power to induce Congress to prohibit slavery in the State of Missouriàhis course on that subject has been disapproved by the whole Southàhis idea [is] that the free negroes ought to participate with the white citizens in the most important civil immunitiesàthe negro and the white man can never harmonize in civil society. God made them antagonist in their nature. You may reduce the white man to the level of the negroàbut you never can elevate the negro to moral, social, and intellectual standard of your free white citizenàthe humane may lament a conditionàbut [it is] original, unchangeable, and beyond the correction of human meansàVan Buren voted in the Senate of the United States to prevent the introduction of slaves into Floridaàhe asserts that Congress has the power to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia; and then states, 'but, should Congress pass such a law, the policy of the act would call on the Executive to withhold his appropriation."
