IVES, Percy (1864-1928), American Artist, ALS, 1 pp., October 29, 1897, Detroit. Written to former President Grover Cleveland and his Wife. Ives sends a neatly penned letter, in full: "Hon. Grover Cleveland Dear Mrs. Cleveland, It was with great pleasure I read in the morning paper of the birth of your son, and I wish to be permitted to extend my congratulations. I often recall my acquaintance with you while painting your portrait and it is to me a most delightful memory. With the hope that Mrs. Cleveland and the boy are doing well. Believe me yours truly, Percy Ives". The son was Richard F. Cleveland (1897-1974). Ives also recounts painting the official White House portrait of Cleveland in 1895. Ives spent three weeks at the White House at a temporary studio a few doors down from the President's office. After one session lasting twenty minutes, the President said "I think I better go now as the Cabinet has been waiting for me for a meeting". During the painting sittings Ives stated that politics were not discussed but rather their talks centered on artists and art. A wonderful personal letter, fine.
