A complete and authentic issue of the Free Press, January 26, 1970, tabloid, 12 pp, minor splits, pulpy paper. From an interior page, we have the "Coroner's Jury - Declares Fred Hampton Murder Justifiable" running 2 full columns. Stunning is the 1/2 page cartoon titled "WHITE MAKES RIGHT! The Story of Law and Order in the Ghetto". In six frames, the cartoon shows the Chicago police breaking into Hampton's Chicago apartment, shooting him in his bed, and Chicago Mayor Da ley congratulating the police. In December 1969, Hampton was shot and killed in his bed during a predawn raid at his Chicago apartment by a tactical unit of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and the FBI. Law enforcement sprayed more than 90 gunshots throughout the apartment, the occupants fired once. During the raid, Panther Mark Clark was also killed and several others were seriously wounded. In January 1970, the Cook County Coroner held an inquest. The jury concluded that Hampton's and Clark's deaths were justifiable homicides.
