Manuscript map, 1p. oblong octavo, in the hand of Colonel Newell Gleason, 87th Indiana, while involved in the Battle of Chickamauga, dated "Sunday 20th" the 2nd day of the battle and signed "N.G. Col. 87th IN", the map depicts the various positions of Union regiments as well as the Rebel Batterys and Infantry. Colonel Gleason notes "This rough diagram shows the relative position of the 3d Brig on Sunday 20th when ordered to support Reynolds left showing why the 87th had 125 killed and wounded in about eight minutes, but after all drove the enemy before it was relieved, and never gone back in the least…" Repaired, else VG. Newell GLEASON (1824-1886) Enlisted as Lt. Colonel in the 87th Indiana on August 28, 1862, he was promoted to Colonel March 22, 1863 and brevetted brigadier general on March 13, 1865.
