RIPLEY, Roswell Sabine (March 14, 1823 – March 29, 1887)[1] was an officer in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and, despite being Northern-born, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He was also an author and a prosperous South Carolina businessman.Autograph Letter Signed, “R.S. Ripley, Brig. genrl.. Comdg” 2pp., written to Governor Pickens, Charleston, october 5th, 1861. In full “ I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Excellency’s letter of the 3rd inst. and beg to state in reply that I shall endeavor to keep a sufficient force for the proper defense of the Department within its limits. The disposition of the Confederate forces must – I take it, be dependent upon the general exigencies of the service, but I do not believe it will be the policy of the Commander in Chief to unduly weaken the force at hand for defense, certainly not until all material preparations for coast defense, are completed, and the regiments themselves be fit for service. Trusting that your Excellency’s endeavors to arm the remaining four regiments alluded to will be very speedily successful, I will only add that you shall be informed of such movements of troops as may be indicated. The armament of the regiment, in order that they may be stationed at once is the highest importance.” Pickens dockets the letter, “Genl. Ripley as to retaining forces in State Oct. 5th, 1861”
