ISABELLA I, (1451-1504) Queen of Castile (1474-1504), born in Madrigal de las Altas Torras, Spain, the daughter of John II, King of Castile and León. In 1469 she married Ferdinand V of Aragon, with whom she ruled jointly from 1479. During her reign, the Inquisition was introduced (1478), the reconquest of Granada completed (1482--92), and the Jews expelled (1492). She sponsored the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World. In 1492 Columbus' conditions (the position of Admiral; governorship for him and his descendants of lands to be discovered; and ten percent of the profits) were met by the Queen. On August 3, 1492, his expedition departed for the New World . He returned the following year and presented his findings to the Queen, bringing natives and gold under a hero's welcome. Spain would then entered a Golden Age of exploration and colonization. In 1494, by the Treaty of Tordesillas, Isabella and Ferdinand divided the Earth - outside of Europe - with Portugal.Manuscript Document Signed by QUEEN ISABELLA and KING FERDINAND, 1p. oblong folio, c. 1500, in Spanish, untranslated.
