West Point button beloning to the uniform of Edward Willougby Anderson (1849-1915) who, when the West Point cadets were ordered to take the oath of allegiance on April 18, 1861, was the first to refuse. He resigned his commission, traveled south, and joined the Confederate Army. He fought with distinction over the next four years as a Captain of Artillery in the Army of Northern Virginia. This brass button is from the West Point uniform he was wearing at the time of his refusal. Fine condition.
