CHARLES STEWART (1778-1869) Rear admiral in the U.S. Navy. In 1800, during the dispute between the U.S. and France, he received command of the "Experiment," which captured several vessels. In 1813, during the War of 1812, he was made commander of the "USS Constitution," with which his record was brilliant: Stewart received a sword of honor from the legislature of Pennsylvania and a gold medal from Congress. In 1862 Stewart was appointed rear admiral on the retired list. Clipped signature as commandant: "I am very respy yr Obt Servant, C.L. Stewart, Comat". 5x2½". Fine
