Nice group of two items pertaining to Thomas Downs (1845- 1911) who at only 16, he left home to enlist as a private in Co. K, 54th Indiana Infantry, later serving in the Vicksburg Campaign and in the Department of the Mississippi with the 16th Indiana Infantry and 13th Indiana Cavalry. A career government man, Downs concluded his military service after the Spanish American War and became an agent of the Indian Bureau. Group includes: An officer`s cap, size 7 1/8, fully line with brown leather sweatband. The brim features two gold tone buttons with Eagle and star details, holding a twisted cord across the front. Green canvas hatband is sewn around the diameter of the hat which is blue felt. The front features a 3-dimensional embroidered eagle with a shield, ribbon, and 13 stars. Manufactured by "The M. C. Lilley & Co" who specialized in military and fraternal hats and regalia from about the Civil War through WWI. Fine condition...plus; Cabinet card photograph of Captain Downs by Goldsmith Studios, in uniform and wearing the above cap. Paper label affixed to verso reads "Photograph Capt. Thomas Downs, return to W.E. Ochiltree, Connersville, Indiana." Fine condition.
