Horace Greeley (February 3, 1811 - November 29, 1872) was founder and editor of the New-York Tribune, among the great newspapers of its time. Long active in politics, he served briefly as a congressman from New York, and was the unsuccessful candidate of the new Liberal Republican party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant. Rare card stock card admitting the bearer to the funeral of Horace Greeley. Measures 3" x 4 ½", some edge wear, chip at left top corner. His body lay in state first at City Hall with up to 50,000 mourners passing his body. The Obsequies was held at the Church of the Divine Paternity, which was attended by President Grant, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Salmon Chase, Vice President Schuyler Colfax, and several Governors. A rare funeral invitation.
