LONGSTREET, James (1821-1904). Longstreet was the senior lieutenant-general in the Confederate Army and was given command of the 1st Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, making him the premier subordinate of the premier army of the Confederacy. Autograph Letter Signed, "James Longstreet 1st Lieut. & Adjt. 8th Infy" 1p. quarto, Mexico, December 7, 1847, addressed to "Lieut G.E. Pickett Act Adgt 8th Infy." and reads " I have the honor to submit the enclosed certificate for the Regimental SurSurgeon of my unfitness for duty, with the request that the indulgence proffered to officers in Genl Orders No. 322 may be extended to myself. Please forward this application to the authority competent to grant the indulgence…" Fine. James Longstreet was wounded in the thigh at Chapultepec, Mexico, on September 13, 1847, on the day this letter was written he was promoted to captain.
