A good pair of rare 20th Maine letters, totaling 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Linnekin, Co. K, 20th Maine Vols., Arlington Heights, [Va.], Sept. 11, 62, reading, in part: "àwe started from Portland a week agoàwe got to Washington Sunday afternoonàwe took the cars from Portland to Boston and the boat to WashingtonàI was not sea sick a nightàthe 36th Mass. went with us in the same boatàwe was crowded someàJohn LinnekinàCo. K, 20th Me. reg." The second letter, reads: "Camp near Fredericksburg, Jan. 1, 63, 2pp. 8vo. "àwe have been pretty busy lately. We have to drill three times a day and cook our grubàwe do not git a chance to blow our noseàwe got our knapsacks the other day. Mine was all rightàJohn." Linnekin served in the 20th Maine, and most certainly at Gettysburg, until he lost his leg at the battle of the Wilderness and died on June 19, 1864.
