Confederate soldier’s letter written by “W. S. Barron,” who served with the GA Reg Batty A Light Artillery, 2pp., Savannah, April 13, 1862. in part, “I presume you have heard of the fall of Ft. Pulaski. more than 5000 men have been busy at work all day like negroes ... I learn that the enemy has demanded the surrender of the city by four o’clock tomorrow ... Rumor says General Jackson will never surrender .. If I am not killed in the fight I will write you again ... if I am killed I bid you a fond and affectionate farewell. ... About thirty vessels are now being loaded with stone and sand to be sunk in the river below the city tonight. .. Our Ladies Gunboat is nearly completed and a 100 men are working on it night and day but they cannot finish it in time. ... If the city is taken, our Ladies Gunboat will be burned ...’
