CRAWFORD, Samuel Wylie (1829 - 1892), Crawford was the surgeon on duty at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, during the Confederate bombardment in 1861. Despite his purely medical background, he was in command of several of the artillery pieces returning fire from the fort. Signed Photograph "S.W. Crawford, Maj. Gen'l" with complete description of the photograph, ""The Officers of Fort Sumter. S. Ca., This photograph was taken in Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor S.C. during its occupancy by Major Robert Anderson & his command, 1860-61. Special permission having been given by Governor F.W. Pickens that a photographer might go to the fort. S.W. Crawford...."The mounted oval albumen photograph, 8" x 6", shows "The Officers of Fort Sumter. S. Ca." The officers are; front row: Capt. A. Doubleday, Major R. Anderson, Asst. Secry. S. W. Crawford, Capt. J. S. Foster; back row: Capt. T. Seymour, Lt. G. W. Snyder, Lt. J. C. Davis, Lt. R. K. Meade, Capt. T. Talbot. An extraordinary photograph, likely accomplished by George S. Cook.
