Cover has line drawing, "Little Eva and Uncle Tom in the Arbor," which is signed in the plate by Baker-Smith (the engravers for the first edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin). The poetic verse was written by John G(reenleaf) Whittier._Boston publisher John P. Jewett entered into a contract with Harriet Beecher Stowe to publish her work, Uncle Tom's Cabin. The contract was signed March 1851, providing Stowe with a 10% commission. And the first printing was late 1851, although dated 1852. By April 1852, all 5000 first editions were sold and several additional editions were printed. Uncle Tom's Cabin was not only a success as a book, but became a phenomenon. Jewett himself started the trend in July 1852 when he commissioned John Greenleaf Whittier to write "Little Eva; Uncle Tom's Guardian Angel," which he published as the first sheet music for Uncle Tom. Whittier was paid $50. Light toning, else VG.
