HILL, Ambrose P. (1825-1865). Confederate lieutenant general who commanded a corps for Lee after succeeding Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville, the red shirt he wore in battle was very much in evidence from Gettysburg until his death just a week before the end of the war. Lee considered him indispensable. His name was on the lips of both Lee and Jackson when they died. As Jackson lay dying, he called on Hill, saying, "Order A. P. Hill to prepare for action." Lee's last words were "Tell Hill he must come up...strike the tents." Printed Letter by W.R. Lalmer, Capt. Top'l Engineers, 1p. octavo, Coast Survey Office, Washington, March 15, 1861, with integral address Franked "A.P. Hill", postmarked March 18, 1861, Washington, pertaining to the coastal survey of 1859. Docketed on verso as received on March 20, 1861, with the 'Captain' crossed out before A.P. Hill's name as he had by that time resigned his commission and cast his lot with the Confederacy.
