REAGAN, John Henninger (1818-1905) CSA Post Master General; CSA acting Attorney General; CSA acting Secretary of the Treasury; CSA acting Secretary of the Navy. Autograph Letter Signed, "John H. Reagan" 4p. folio, June 23, 1865, "In prison Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, addressed to A.J. Hamilton, Provisional Governor for the State of Texas, and reads in part: "…I have applied to the President of the United States for pardon and amnesty under his proclamation of the 29th of May. I see that he has directed that such applications shall be made through the Governors of the States in which the applicants reside…I am desirous of obtaining your interposition in my behalf, which will be doubly important on account of your official relations to the government and of your knowledge of my political antecedents and of my personal character….While I recognize the wide difference in the courses pursued by us in the late conflict, I am persuaded there is no one to whom I could appeal with more confidence than to yourself to attest the sincerity of the conviction and the purity of the motives from which I acted or the fidelity and integrity with which I would comply with the duties which the pardon I ask would devolve on me. If restored to my liberty and rights as a citizen and to my family…And you should find no citizen of Texas more truly and sincerely sustaining you in those measures necessary to the restoration of the permanent peace, order and prosperity of the state. I took the course which has led to my present situation under the conscientious belief that it was right necessary and allowable under our form of government and trusted until recently, with undoubting faith, that God would sustain our cause because of my convictions of its justice. It was His to give the victory or to visit us with defeat…During my whole political course before the war to a period shortly before its commencement, as you know, I was always a Union man, and did all I could to discountenance and defeat sectionalism North and South…" Much more.
