LEWIS C. LEVIN (1808-1860), Prominent Jewish attorney born Charleston; practiced law in Maryland, later Penna. Publisher and editor of Philadelphia "THE SUN" newspaper, the organ of that "KNOW NOTHING PARTY" promoting a nativist, anti-alien, anti-Catholic movement (but strangely, not anti-Jewish) which became an important American political newspaper. TWO ORIGINAL COPIES. Each four pages; large 15 x 21 fancy mastheads with illus. of American eagle and shield and Levin's name as "editor" and "publisher" prominently featured next to masthead at top of page. Also has his own column and name boldly at head of page 2. Editions for Oct. 1, and Sept. 13, 1845. Both complete; both with large water stain filling most pages, but not obscuring any print. Weak and fragile; some tears on centerfold; few nicks and chips edges of bottom margin, but complete. Issue of Sept. had section of right column on first page neatly removed. Levin also served as U.S. Congressman from Penna. 1845-1851 and as chairman of Naval Affairs Committee. Accompanied with fine bio sketches of Levin.…
