RABBI MORRIS JACOB RAPHALL (1798-1868) served as rabbi in New York; associated with Isaac Leeser; preached against Reform. His lectures on Jewish history attracted large crowds including many Christians; he became the foremost interpreter of Judaism to the non-Jew. Also noted for having given the very first invocation by a Jew (in 1860) before the U.S. House of Representatives. Neatly penned single page note: "Dr. Raphall can have the Saloon of the Masonic Hall on 29'th January [and other dates]…Dr. Cohen will oblige me by letting me know on Monday the nights Dr. Raphall decides to occupy the Hall." Signed by Joseph Robinson for the Hall. Addressed on reverse to "Dr. Cohen." Although undated, is circa 1850's-early 1860's. Accompanied with fine copies of Raphall's bio sketches and interesting account of his personal meeting with Lincoln. Exc+ condition.
