Includes rare early carte-de-visite studio portrait full standing image of very youthful Sulzberger; age early twenties, c. 1863-65; (2 ½ x 4 ½) with Phila. photographer label on reverse. (showing age; sepia toned; exc.; sharp and clear); ANOTHER CARTE-DE-VISITE of him with different Phila. photographer label; head and shoulders studio portrait of handsome young man; age late twenties; exc.+. PLUS THREE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, fine quality (3 x 5; 3 x 5 ½; 4 ½ x 6 ½) studio portraits (one seated; other two upper body) varying ages in his later career age about 60 to 70; all are exc.+. PLUS TWO DIFFERENT CANDID VIEWS of him evidently aboard large ship, waving goodbye and putting on his hat (age 50-60's) exc. PLUS ONE VERY FINE DETAILED GROUP SHOT OF HIM AT AGE 45 SEATED OUTSIDE house with seven friends (4 x 6). Dated August, 1888 on reverse; Bedford, Pa photographer's label; exc.+. Interesting and unusual group of images of this famous American Jewish attorney; elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas 1895, the first Jew since earliest days of the Republic to hold Judicial office in Phila.; subsequently president of the court, obtaining great fame. He devoted much of his life to Jewish learning; trusted friend of Isaac Leeser (and the executor of his estate, 1868) widely lectured and wrote on various Jewish subjects; organizer and first president of the A. J. C.; founder and president of Jewish Pub. Society and chairman of its Pub. Committee; rendered important role in organization of Jewish Theological Seminary and member of its board; governor of Dropsie College and founder; director of Hebrew Ed. Society and Gratz College and much more. Accompanied with lengthy and important bio sketches. Few ever equaled his achievements or importance in the American Jewish community. All 8 images………
