HENRIETTA SZOLD (born Baltimore 1860) especially known for her Zionist work circa 1890's-early 1900's; famous as the founder of Hadassah; fulfilled important role with the Jewish Pub. Society. Here are three original letters by her, all with fine autograph signatures, all addressed to famous American Jurist Mayer Sulzberger; communal leader and also president of the J. P. S. All on original letterheads of the J. P. S. (each a different style of printing and layout): (1) Two full pages (blank reverse) entirely penned in her tiny, but easily read hand, with fine autograph signature from N.Y. July 25, 1906. She opens: "Regarding the monograph on 'Napoleon and the Jews,' no authority was given us. The Pub. Committee merely directed us to obtain a suggestion as to a possible writer…so that matter must rest until the meeting." Discusses other books and changing of schedules; holding off publication until "Yearbook" was ready; mentions other books "in the works"; asks Judge's opinions about arrangement for publications and schedules for others, especially those of Dr. Schechter. Exc.+. (2) Typed letter to Sulzberger; three pages with fine original penned signature of Szold. June 27, 1910. It opens: "I regret I must trouble you again with 'The Legends of the Jews'…not able to find anyone [to undertake editing of it…and mentions various individuals she requested, without success]… I must have your advice or sanction in choosing [others]." She mentions other names including two that are "not a Jew" nor a "Semitic scholar" advising why she believes they might be of assistance; needs further direction from the Judge. She also believes one of those names may be a personal affront to the author Dr. Ginzberg. Exc. …(3) Two page typed letter to Sulzberger from NY Jan. 23, 1907 regarding help in answering a letter from a subscriber about the Jewish population of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and W. Virginia and how the J. P. S. might best follow-up to acquire statistics about them for the "American Jewish Yearbook." Fine autograph signature. Exc.+. All three letters plus lengthy bio sketches of both Henrietta Szold and Sulzberger..
