Fascinating collection of documents regarding WWI war refugees. Includes: (1) two single page (8 x 10) type-written letters with very fancy letterheads "HEBREW SHELTERING AND IMMIGRANT AID SOCIETY OF AMERICA…NEW YORK" and printed list of directors, names of branches in various cities, etc. Addressed to Louis E. Levy; regarding "…memorandum for the guidance of all our offices relative to work in Japan. Deals with method of cooperation between Yokohama office and those in America. Immigration by way of the Far East. (2) Six pages of typed copy on original printed letter sheets with headline at top of that same society. All sent to Seattle branch Dec. 4, 1917 "Report for November." ALSO: Seven pages regarding immigrants handled, arrivals, illiterate Roumanians & Armenians "…running away from religious persecution…Turkish Mohammedans are persecuting Armenian Christians" and more…with heart-rending accounts of Jewish escapes, including that of a girl who stowed away on Japanese ship to cross the Pacific…(3) Typed pages, on yellow sheets (some tattering on edges and showing wear and use) with further detail of immigrant surveys; costs of caring for them; review of work and problems of the society during the 1890's. Normal aging, but exc. A little known route of the immigrants.
