Autograph Letter Signed “R. Merritt”, 1p. quarto, February 22, 1813, L. Arienth, France, and reads in part: “...you have said that you would like to visit France if the other parts are like this. You would be disgusted with it at the first glimpse. There is instead of fashions 5/8 of the people employed in hard labour daily for subsistence. The town of L. Ourinth is small and walled in, the buildings are of stone and old, the streets filled with dirt & filth, the bastile as large as the State prison & upwards of four thousand prisoners in it who are chained two & two and are put to daily labour. There are 84 ship now ready for sea & one frigate, there is two 34’s & two 64’s on the stalks, the French has thirty thousand men soldiers I mean, which has perished this winter in Russia with the cold & I understand likewise horses...” VG.
