A nice early 18th century 2pp. folio, slave indenture, reading, in part: "This Indenture made this 19th day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-eight between John Phillips, of the one part, and Elizabeth Phillips of the other part both of the County of Prince George, and children and heirs of John Phillips the younger late of the county aforesaid deceased witnesseth, That Whereas by the last will and Testament of the aforesaid John Phillips the younger deceased…did will and devise that all his personal estate should be equally divided between the parties to these present…He the said John Phillips one of the parties to these presents is content and satisfied to take, and actually hath taken as his part of the Negro slaves belonging to the estate aforesaid the following negro slaves, to wit Stephen, Pomp, Kate, Tom and little Tom, and she the aforesaid Elizabeth Phillips is content and satisfied to take & actually hath taken as her part of the negro slaves belonging to the said estate the following slaves, to wit, Charles, Roger, Abb, Jude, Edmund, Will Frank. And whereas it was once stipulated and agreed on between the parties to these presents that whatever slaves might be purchased with the profits arising from the estate of the aforesaid John Phillips the younger…the following slaves have actually been purchased with the profits arising from the estate of the said John Phillips the younger decd. To wit, Will, Phoebe, Peter and Annica, and Dick…". True copy from 1801. VG.
