An intriguing content letter written shortly after the failed uprising and subsequent hanging of slave rebel Gabriel Prosser (1776-1800) at Richmond, Virginia, with discussion of some of the efforts made to quell new revolts.. Autograph letter signed, "Jas Rush", 1p. quarto, [n.p.], Nov. 10, 1800, with hand carried cover to John Mason Esquire (possibly son of Signer George Mason), George Town. Rush notes that he is unable to meet with Mason in Georgetown until tomorrow. "I had last week heard of the disturbance occasioned by the Pat[r]ols. I was in hopes the effects of it had been by this time done away. The late events at Richmond had occasioned the Governor to order the militia to patrol different quarters and if any improper assemblage of the Blacks should be discovered to have them brought before a magistrate of the commanding officer. This power in the hands of ignorant and arbitrary characters will be frequently abused. ….We seem to be extremely unfortunate, we hardy get into a proper train before something turns up to disconcert our measures." Archival tape repairs on cover; general wear and soiling. Overall VG.
