Autograph Letter Signed, “William J. Jones” 2p. quarto, Lynchburg, Virginia, January 17, 1851, with integral leaf addressed to Master Robert Allen in Peaksville, Virginia, it reads in part: “...I beleive there is more noise in this place than any other town in the United States of the same size but you soon get used to it. I am engaged as salesman here we have eight that belongs to the establishment, 3 salesmen , 1 clerk, 2 that attend to the forwarding & 2 negroes making eight all together. I like it very well here but it is right lonesome. You may think it strange to be lonesome in town but when they are all strangers there may be ever so many and still be lonesome...There is plenty of pretty girls here but I have not got acquainted with any of them but I do not care if I never do you can see them walking along the street dressed up like so many doll babys and looking quite as prim but as Major Jones says it is not all flesh that walks no more than it is all gold that shines in Peter Funks window...” VG.
