Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, Washington, April 7, 1866, with cover addressed to Mrs. Austin Loomis in Pittsburg, and reads in part: “..Do not be alarmed about my health. Had quite a spell spitting blood, which resulted from a sever cold, but am all right again...I quit drinking totally sometime since & have not even put my face inside of bar rooms since. I don’t like to say much on the subject as various efforst I made in the past were failures, but I am now perfectly satsified that I will never under any circumstances, become intemperate again. In fact I have not the slightest desire to drink. Moreover I attend church regularly twice each sabbath, so you see my reformation is progressive. When my voluntary exile from Pittsburg, five years, is over I hope to return a moral, temperate, & religious man that even my enemies cannot taunt me with acts committed in the past...Tell Jennie the young ladies here captured all my photographs & that I barely succeeded in saving one for you & father. That I will have some mroe taken soon better ones if possible, & that she shall not be neglected....Tell the children they msut be real good & obedient or uncle Orlo won’t promise to bring his fiddle when he comes...Washington is very dull, business absolutely flat. Heaven only knows how it will be when Congress adjourns. The passage of the ‘Civil Rights Bill’ by the Seante last nigth has created quite an excitement. Washington niggers were jubilant of course - bless ‘em. Hate the ebonies more cordially every day of my life. Only a small squad of 30,000 in this district...” Fine.
