Letter written by Private Aaron Haber of the 105th Ohio to his wife. 2 pgs., April 16th, 1865, Rush Barracks, Washington, D.C. Reads in part: “Dear Wife, It is with solemn heart that I am seated this day to pen you a few lines to let you know that I am well but sorry to state that our President has been killed the best man that ever lived for. The last week there has been great rejoicing here over the victories that we were gaining daily and the hopes of an early peace but now every thing is in a mournful condition for the loss of our leader, but though we have another that promises to do well and we trust that Johnson does well as what Lincoln has done, but the people has not the same confidence in Johnson that they had in Lincoln, for Lincoln has been tried and Johnson is a new hand but we will have to trust in God to guide him through right. President was shot at Fords Theater on Friday night at half past ten oclock and died Saturday morning at twenty two minutes past seven. The mans name is J.W. Boothe that shot him and made his escape thus far with out being caught, but every body is on the look out for him and is hope that he be brought to justice. I will send you a paper which will tell more than I can tell you.” Excellent detailed content written just one day after Lincoln’s death. Weakness at folds, couple of splits at folds, else fine. A very rare account of Lincoln’s assassination.
