Winters served Co.K, 50th Ohio being captured at Franklin November 1864 and was released the following Spring setting for home on the ill-fated steamer Sultana. This rare silk reunion ribbon, 2” x 6,” is printed, “36th Annual Reunion of the Sultana Survivors’ Association, Tues. Apr. 29, 1919.”At two o'clock in the morning on April 27th, 1865, the boilers of the steamboat Sultana exploded just north of Memphis on the Mississippi River. The boat was packed with 2,100 released Union prisoners of war. More than 1,700 people died in the worst marine disaster in United States History.
