Autograph Letter Signed, “Joseph E. Anderson” 2p. octavo, Spring Garden, Pittyslvania County, Virginia, March 16, 1861, with cover addressed to James Anderson at Richmond College, and reads in part: “..I never habe been pesterd in all my life on our national matters as I have been for a few months past. We are now afloat upon the OCean & no telling when and where we are to land. I fear that our national prosperity is at, or near an end & that the Almighty is about to visit the nation with Chastisment & Scourge, for the wickness of the people, it seems that all departments of Government & all public men & private ones too have forgotten to appreciate our many blessings - look how men are engaged against each other, it makes me feel mournful and melancholly to think our once belssed country is going to destruction. It seems every things going wrong nothing going right. I feel deeply mortified when I hear of men in our midst speaking in a way of disparragement to the South, our blessed south, oh how I feel for the South, her honor and prosperity, talk about urging coercive measures, I dont want to think of such a thing, indeed if that is attempted all is gone so far as free institutions is concerned...” Fine.James Anderson (1845-1908), enlisted at the age of sixteen in the 57th Virginia Infantry, and would fight under General Armistead, with whom his regiment was desimated at Gettysburg. He was wounded at Drewry’s Bluff, and would serve throughout the war with his regiment.
