Dulton in the 2nd Regiment NC Troops, two of the letters have mouse chew, the 1st however is fine, they read in part: “...[Raleigh, NC, June 2, 1861] the troops still coming in from every direcion, and some are leaving every day it is thought that we will be ordered to Gariesburg on the line between N.C. & V.A. and drill there. Raleigh is the last place to be a city taht is out its in a beautiful place; but the houses are all the old fashion, the state house is a fine building, the Convention is in Session yet, but they are doing nothing at all. I have been up there and seen them several times. W. & S. Dallon are here in the Madison Company they are well, I saw them yesterday. Capt. Loves Company are here quartered in the house that Burtons company were in, we put up our tents and we fare a heap better than those who are in houses...I even eat more than I did at home...Our time goes on from the time we was reported which was about the 14th of May. If you write to me direct your letters to Raleigh, Care of Capt. Corbett and if we are gone they will be sent on to him. The soldiers are in fine spirits...[7/4/1861 Yorktown, Va.]This is one of the best fortified places in the state, and we are still throwing up breastworks every day. It would take fifty thousand troops to take this place...There is a regiment of French Zouaves here they are the savagest looking men I ever saw, they can run double quick 15 miles at a beat...Dr. Williams is with us and he is going to stay to see we get the proper attention if we get sick...[Camp Martin, Va. 11/29/1861]the health of our company is very good with the exception of a few cases. R.M. Hord, C. Ellioit & S.P. Magness are sick...no prospect of a fight here, we are preparing to put up Winter Quarters...” A nice group.
