War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed, “John P. Mougin” 2p. octavo, Richmond County, October 3, 1862, addressed to Mrs. Baldy, and reads “Soon after the battle in which Stephen was wounded I learned that he had been severly wounded, but hoping that his wound might not prove fatal, I delayed writing you, since, I wrote on to Richmond and wrote to Col Behn, and an answer from him (the Col) by Wednesdays mail brings me the sad intelligence of Stephens death. I learn from Mr. Rhodes who has been in the employ of the government and just returned from Richmond that Stephen was buried at a place called Warrenton. Mr. Rhodes will leave for Richmond next Monday I will ask him to find and mark the spot where he is buried. It is very gratifying to me to be able to state that I have it from the best authority that Stephen as long as he has been connected with the army and notwithstanding the demoralizing influences around hm, always conducted himself with the strictest propriety, and I had looked forward to a bright future for him, we truly sympathize with you and the family...” Fine. Arguably the most celebrated regiment fielded by Arkansas during the Civil War, the Third Regiment, Arkansas Volunteers, served in Virginia from its inception to its surrender at Appomattox Court House. The Third Arkansas was one of a handful of Arkansas regiments that maintained their organizational integrity throughout the war, and generally enjoyed competent, stable leadership. For most of its service, it was an integral part of the famous Texas Brigade, “Lee’s Grenadier Guard,” of the Army of Northern Virginia. During its four years of war 1,353 men served in the Third Arkansas. Only 150 remained at the surrender. Stephen S. Baldy served as a member of the ‘Confederate Stars’ of Company C, 3rd Arkansas Infantry.
