War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed, “John S. Martin” 4p. octavo, November 23, 1862, and reads in part: “...I have the worst cold that I ever had in my life I have the worst arm that you ever saw. I have been vacinated and my arm is so bad that I can not use it...I am out of money, I think that we will draw in a few days...We have lost one of our mess mates, he died very sudden...he had a chill last Thursday, Friday morning he got up and came to the fire and sat down until the drum beat to the sick and he went up to the Doct....he was dead by ten oclock....” VG. The 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, 4 Sept 1861, and the field officers were appointed by President Jefferson Davis. AThe army numbered 858 men in January 1861; it lost 20 k and 80 w at Shiloh, and 56% of the 527 engaged at Chickamauga. It had 209 casualties in Chattanooga and was reduced to 275 effectives in November 1864.
