BEAUREGARD, Pierre G.T. (1818-1893) Louisiana-born author, civil servant, politician, inventor, and the first prominent general for the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Lengthy and historically important Autograph Endorsement Signed, “G.T. Beauregard Gen. Comdg.” 1p. oblong quarto, Head Quarters Deptartment South Carolina, Georgia, & Florida, Charleston, South Carolina, August 17, 1863, and reads “...I can employ all the negroes now here to the greatest advantage. Two weeks of labor at this time may be vital; and must affect more in defence of Charleston, and do more toward securing the slave owners of South Carolina in their property than a years work at a later period. I can but regret therefore that the state agent feels warranted in urging this application at this critical juncture, when the enemy is throwing at our works more than 500 projectiles an hour. I must therefore bespeak the attention of His Excellency Gov. Bonham. If he shall agree with the state agent, then these negroes shall be discharged, with the understanding however, that I protest against it, believing their owners would with few exceptions be quite willing to permit them under the circumstances, to remain for some weeks longer; that is until impressments could be made in such Districst as have not furnished their due quota...” Small loss at left affects a few words, else VG.
