Rare war-date Confederate Autograph Document Signed, “Robert Watson” 3p. octavo, State of South Carolina, Spartanburg District, April 13, 1863, and reads “To all whom it may concern Know ye that I Robert Watson of the aforesaid state and district do hereby bind myself, my heirs exors & admrs. and Assign in a bond of two thousand dollars. The conditions of the within bond is as follows: That William Whitmore doth hereby agree to go in to Confederate Service as a substitute for John M. Layton to remain in service during the war for the sum of one thousand dollars which amount I John M. Layton have this day given a note to Robert Watson for Eight Hundred and Twenty Dollars given Payable on or before the Twenty Fifth day of December next with interest from date and also have paid in money one hundred and eighty dollars making in all one thousand dollars as above named out of which William Whitmore is to take Fifty dollars to pay expences back if necessary. The condition of the note and money is that if the said William Whitmore get in as a substitute in said John M. Laytons place for the war and said Robert Watson receives a certificate from the Captain of the Company that said William Whitmore attaches himself to as a substitute in said John M. Laytons palce then the above named note and money is said Robert Watsons and stands good for the above named certificateand if said Robert Watson fails to get such certificates the note above named is null & void...” Additionaly signed by Wm. Watson, and C.C. Layton. Good.
