WINDER, John (1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. Manuscript Document Signed, “E.G. Bickford” 1p. quarto, Richmond, Virginia, February 10, 1863, and reads “I hereby certify that I am acquainted with the bearer of this, Mr. Leandre Parchet, a French citizen, and I know him to be a well behaved man, who has always conducted himself honestly and with propriety since he has been in this city, and with fidelity to the Confederatcy....” with notation at bottom “Pass J.H. W” by General Winder. Fine.
