The Hampton Legion Cavalry Patrols Near Alexandria In September 1861 A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter written by Sgt. Leonard Williams, Hampton Legion, South Carolina Cavalry, 4p. quarto, Bacon Race Church, Camp Griffin, Virginia, September 9, 1861, and reads in part: "…We have been stationed here about 3 weeks & a few days over & the monotony of duties is becoming tiresome….Genl. Johnson says that we occupy the most important post on the river, but so far we have been inactive. A few days ago a scouting party from our squadron went to within three miles of Alexandria encountered & drove in the enemies pickets & took 4 prisoners, 2 wagons, 4 horses & 8 or 10 muskets. We do not know where or when the next fight will take place…A few members of our company paid a visit to the Butler guards & returned last night…there is no sickness of any account in our company, at present…Our fare is getting scant, & very often we make meals without meat…there is a prospect of getting paid soon & then we can have what we like to eat, this is a very poor country & the people poor & the crops have been much neglected this year…". Fine.
