A good war-date Confederate officer's letter written by Captain Leonard Williams, Hampton Legion, South Carolina Cavalry, 3p. octavo, Mt. Pleasant, July 13, 1864, and reads in part: "…The enemy have failed in their assaults on John & James Islands. They have been driven back & I believe they have entirely left both islands. I went into the city yesterday it is a dull place, it has under gone as great a change as Fredericksburg, Va. more than half the city abandoned & the other part occupied in a great measure by venders of vegetables, fruit & etc., mostly foreigners. The part of the city now occupied is that with which I am best acquainted…prices are, I believe about as high as ever watermelons sell at from $3 to $10…I have no officer with me, Perry is with the regt as commissary. Stokes & Blythe are sick at Georgetown…The firing on the city & Ft. Sumter is much less frequent, the last two or three days…" VG.
