War-Date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed, “Wm. Crawford” 44th North Carolina Infantry, 1p. octavo, WIA in 1863, taken prisoner at Cold Harbor, confined at Point Lookout and later at Elmira, better known as ‘Hellmira’ by those who were confined there, this concentration camp was built late in the Civil War and had a death rate higher than Andersonville prison. This 1p. octavo letter is datelined “Elmira, New York, August 1, 1864, and reads “ I have taken the opportunity of wirting to in this my present time of need and trust you can certainly not refuse to help me. I am here a prisoner and am without clothing and would like if you could send me a little box of eatables, tobacco, &c. Circumstances compel me to ask your kind assistance thus far if I am a rebel. Some day (if I live) shall repay you for your kindness. My address is Prisoners Camp war 18 Elmira N.Y. If you send shoes please send Number 9’s. The length of our letters are limited and I’ll not write more than allowed. We are in good health here & have splendid water. There is a good many Rebs in here now and I expect more are coming from Pt. Lookout, Md...” About VG.
