War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed “J.R. White”, 2nd Lieutenant, 7th Texas Infantry, 2p. quarto, “In line of Battle Seven miles South East of Atlanta, Geo.” August 23, 1864, with excellent content, it reads in part: “...I see we have Peace Commissioners in the North the first offer for Peace they made was a reconstruction of the Union. They did not try even for once to get a recognition they only try to save their Negroes. Lincoln says slavery must be abolished in the Rebelious States as if it was continued it would cause another war. We all look with anxiety to the Chicago Convention which meets the 29th of this inst. If they nominate a Peace candidate we may have peace if not subjugation or continued war will be our doom for the South seems determined to hold onto the Nigger if all the White men are killed & their families starve to death. I believe I wrote you in my last home our Army is stealing, robbing, & burning up all that the citizens have leaving the families of poor soldiers to starve, it makes my heart ache to think of it. We are still picket fighting the Feds day & night & have been for nearly 4 months on some part of our line & occassionaly we have a hard fight. A few days ago a Yankee Raid started down the Macon Road tearing it up as they went their intention was to cut off our supplies & then go on to Andersonville where we have 36 thousand Yankee prisoners and turn them out. But our forces ovetook them a hard fight ensued loss heavy on both sides, particularly Rosse’s Brigade of Texans suffered terribly in killed & wounded the Raiders are said to be turned back. How this campaign is to end I can’t tell both parties are fortified & trying to cut off each others supplies. L.D. Berry is well, brother Johns Patrick is well...I have not drew any money since December, I have been out ever since March only as I have borrowed I owe about 50 dollars borrowed money. I think I shall draw in a few days Confederate money old issue here is worth nothing new issue very little...” VG.
